Someone who has completed First Aid Training appropriate to the level identified in the First Aid Needs Assessment. If formally qualified then they need to ensure that they have a valid certificate and undertake refresher/requalification training when required.

As a guide, the HSE suggests the following number of trained first-aiders being available at all times people are at work:

For low-hazard work (e.g. offices, shops and libraries)

For higher-hazard work (e.g. light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments, construction, chemical manufacture).
