Unlike Direct Costs, Indirect Costs are not obvious and are usually more than Direct Costs. These could be costs associated with:
- Lost labour including recruitment and training as well as the cost of lost expertise and experience. There may be costs for overtime or temp labour.
- Cleanup costs and the cost of the time spent dealing with incidents and investigations, court appearances and from facilitating enforcement visits etc. There might also be a Fee for Intervention (FFI) if an inspector is needed to visit the site from the HSE. There could be costs for product and material damage, lost production time, legal costs, investigation time/admin, supervisors/first aider time, fines, loss of morale/bad publicity and increased premiums. It’s not really possible to insure against.
- Loss of business including loss of sales, productivity, tenders and the cost of securing replacement work.
