A First Aid Needs Assessment may identify that a first aid room should be provided. This is most likely for larger workplaces where there are more hazards or greater risks.
Rooms should be easily accessible and there should be a designated person who should supervise it.
It is good practice to ensure a first aid room is only used for this purpose and should also:
- Be large enough to accommodate an examination/medical couch;
- Have washable surfaces and adequate heating, ventilation and lighting;
- Be clean and tidy, accessible and available for use at all times when employees are working;
- Ideally have a sink with hot and cold running water;
- Be positioned as near as possible to a point of access for transport to hospital;
- Display a notice on the door advising of the names, locations and (if appropriate) contact details for people who are a First-Aider.
- Signs should comply with the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996.
